Woman Swept Away by Barak’s Current, Fisherman Rushes to Her Rescue

An elderly woman was rescued alive from the Barak River at Annapurna Ghat in Silchar after she allegedly jumped into the water on Friday (September 3). Police later reached the spot and took the woman with them for further inquiry.

According to a witness, the woman came to the ghat and stepped into the river. People initially thought she had entered the water to take a bath. However, they soon noticed that she was being swept away by the current.

The witness said people then called a fisherman who was nearby in a boat. The fisherman immediately went towards the woman and helped rescue her from the river.

“She is safe now and the police are here to look into the matter,” the witness said.

The woman was reportedly questioned about her circumstances and family situation. However, witnesses said she was unable to speak clearly following the incident and could not provide clear details about where she lived.

A local account suggested that the woman may have been facing difficulties at home. The earlier report also alleged that she had taken the extreme step because of harassment by her daughter-in-law. However, this allegation has not been independently verified.
