Workshop on alternative dispute resolution held at Assam University

A one-day workshop on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) was held at the Department of Business Administration, Assam University on Monday.

The inaugural session of the event, which was organised under the aegis of the Department of Law and Department of Business Administration of the varsity, was attended by a host of distinguished luminaries including advocate Shameer Shah (who is also a globally recognised arbitrator), Prof. D.K. Pandiya, vice chancellor (in-charge) of Assam University, Rashmi Ranjan Mishra, head of the Department of Law, Assam University, Madhumita Dhar Sarkar, co-ordinator of the workshop organising committee and Arup Barman, joint co-ordinator among others.

In the technical session of the event, Shameer Shah, who is also the director of the India branch of Chartered Institute of Arbitration, London addressed the students, research fellows and faculty members of the departments of law and business administration and spoke on different aspects related to ADR.

Madhumita Dhar Sarkar, co-ordinator of the workshop organising committee, said the main objective of organising the day-long workshop is to create awareness among people on ADR.

Alternative dispute resolution includes dispute resolution processes and techniques that act as a means for disagreeing parties to come to an agreement short of litigation. It is a collective term for the ways that parties can settle disputes, with the help of a third party.
