Mastermind of Fake Doctors’ Racket J.P. Das Arrested; Studied in Bangladesh, Ran Fake Institute in Silchar: SSP
For the past few months, people of Barak Valley have been waking up almost every other day to news of quack doctors being arrested. On Wednesday afternoon (October 22), Cachar Police caught what they believe to be the mastermind behind the racket — Jayanta Prashad Das, popularly known as Dr J.P. Das. Das ran a fraudulent institution in Silchar, and the primary investigation revealed that he studied in Bangladesh.
Das, who is the 14th person to be arrested in connection with the ongoing crackdown on fake doctors, was detained by Cachar Police led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta. He was arrested from Silchar on October 22 after police traced his involvement in running a fraudulent medical institute and issuing fake medical certificates.
According to SSP Mahatta, Das operated an institute called the National Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Silchar, which falsely claimed to provide certificates in alternative medicine. “During our recent operation, the one name that came up repeatedly was Dr J.P. Das. He was running a fraudulent institute called the National Institute of Medical Science which has no recognition of any kind. Through this, he supplied false certificates to many, allowing them to pose as doctors. We also suspect his own degree to be fake,” said the SSP.
As per SSP Mahatta, preliminary investigation revealed that Das did not study in any Indian medical institution but completed his education in Bangladesh. He also owned a private nursing home at Trunk Road, Capital Point, named Mawsumi Hospital and Geno Spa and Therapy Centre. Police sources added that these spa centres were allegedly being used for anti-social activities, including prostitution.
The SSP further stated that the fraudulent certificates issued by NIMS may have reached people in other states, enabling unqualified individuals to practise medicine beyond the borders of Assam as well. “After years of him running this racket, we finally caught and arrested him. Our efforts are continuing to identify and take action against everyone involved,” Mahatta said.
When asked why he was being arrested, JP Das said, “I have been linked with the Pulak Malakar case”. Pulak Malakar was the first fake doctor arrested in Cachar, who was practising as a gynaecologist in Siva Sundari Nari Sikshasram, Park Road, Silchar. Regarding his institute, Das said, “I educated people throughout my life”.
Meanwhile, the website of the National Institute of Medical Sciences, Silchar portrays it as a legitimate institution, claiming government recognition and affiliation with reputed universities and hospitals. It also advertises Post Graduate Programmes under WHO-listed universities. The site’s gallery section even features images of students celebrating freshers’ day, attending classes, giving exams, and participating in events, furthering its illusion of authenticity.
However, police have confirmed that no such recognition exists, and the institute is entirely fake. The arrest of J.P. Das marks a significant development in the Cachar Police’s operation against quackery, which has so far exposed several individuals endangering lives through fraudulent medical practices in Barak Valley.
