Nijut Moina Scheme Extended to Assam University: Eligible Female Students To Get Rs 2500 a Month

In a positive development, Assam University, Silchar, has now been included under the Nijut Moina Scheme. This move brings great relief and support to hundreds of female students studying there.

Minister Kaushik Rai confirmed the news through a social media post, stating that female students from Assam studying at Assam University will now receive Rs 2,500 per month for up to 10 months under this scheme.

The Nijut Moina Scheme is a special initiative by the Government of Assam that gives financial support to girls from economically weaker families who are pursuing higher education. Previously, this scheme was only available to students attending government-run colleges within Assam. Private institutions and Central Universities like Assam University were not included.

However, this has now changed. As per a press release, in a cabinet meeting held on July 31, 2025, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma approved the extension of the scheme to Assam University. Despite being a Central University, AUS will now be covered by this scheme.

This positive step was made following the continued efforts of Pritam Acharjee, a student of Assam University. Pritam had formally sent applications and raised the issue with Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, and even reached out to the Chief Minister himself.

Following this announcement, Acharjee shared, “This decision is a victory for every student who believed their voice matters. I thank the Hon’ble Chief Minister and Education Minister for responding to our call and extending the scheme to our university. I am proud to have played a part in this journey and remain committed to standing up for student rights.”

This development was also supported by Baskar Goswami, President of the AUSU Ad-Hoc Committee, and Biswarup Bhattacharjee, former AUSU President. The inclusion of Assam University in the Nijut Moina Scheme marks a positive change and will encourage more girls from Assam to continue their higher studies without financial worry.
