Counting of votes for the Assam Assembly Election will begin at 8 am on May 4, with authorities in Cachar expressing confidence in a smooth and secure process. The results are expected within 10 to 11 hours, which will determine the winners across all seven Legislative Assembly Constituencies in the district.

According to District Commissioner Ayush Garg, extensive arrangements have been made for the counting process. Each constituency will have 14 counting tables, with around 500 postal ballots assigned per table. Katigorah, which recorded the highest number of voters and turnout, will undergo 21 rounds of counting, while other constituencies are expected to complete 16 to 17 rounds on average.

Postal ballot counting will begin at 8 am, followed by Electronic Voting Machine counting from 8.30 am. Around 700 counting staff and 500 police personnel have been deployed, taking the total number of officials involved to approximately 1,200. Authorities said that all candidates have been briefed about the counting procedures in advance.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Manas Saikia confirmed that the counting will take place at ISBT, Ramnagar. He said that multiple joint inspections have been conducted to ensure compliance with Election Commission of India guidelines. Security arrangements include strict frisking and monitoring of entry points to maintain order throughout the process.

Cachar recorded significant voter turnout across its constituencies. Katigorah led with 88.39 per cent, followed by Borkhola at 85.64 per cent and Lakhipur at 85.57 per cent. Udharbond recorded 83.81 per cent turnout, while Sonai, Dholai and Silchar saw 81.73 per cent, 81.12 per cent and 80.68 per cent respectively.

In terms of key contests, Borkhola is witnessing a fight between Kishore Nath of BJP and Dr Amit Kalwar of Congress. In Dholai, BJP’s Amiya Kanti Das is up against Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha. Katigorah has Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha of BJP contesting against Congress candidate Amar Chand Jain.

Lakhipur features a contest between BJP’s Kaushik Rai and Congress candidate M Santi Kumar Singha. In Silchar, BJP’s Dr Rajdeep Roy is facing Congress candidate Abhijit Paul. Sonai has a contest between Aminul Haque Laskar of Congress and Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of AGP. In Udharbond, BJP’s Rajdeep Goala is contesting against Congress candidate Ajit Singh.

Apart from these candidates, several independent candidates as well as nominees from SUCI(C) are also in the fray across constituencies. Officials have assured that all necessary measures are in place to ensure transparency, security and timely completion of the counting process.

With counting set to begin early in the morning and a clear timeline in place, all eyes in Cachar will remain on the results through the day. The outcome in these constituencies will also contribute to the overall result of the Assam Assembly Election, where the combined verdict from all districts will determine which party or alliance forms the government and rules the state for the next five years. Authorities have reiterated their preparedness, and a smooth, transparent counting process is anticipated as candidates and voters await the final verdict.
