Show Cause Notice Issued To Sonai Teacher Over ‘Alleged’ Political Involvement

The Cachar district administration has issued a show-cause notice to a government school teacher over his alleged involvement in political activities in the poll-bound 119-Sonai Legislative Assembly Constituency. The news of this was first reported by Barak Bulletin on March 29.

Govt School Teacher Turns Campaigner For Sonai Congress Candidate

Rajib Ahmed Mazumder, a Science teacher at Nutan Hailakandi High School in Kaptanpur, has been asked to explain his position within three days after a complaint that he was actively engaged in political activities with the Congress candidate, Aminul Haque Laskar.

The Cachar District Administration stated that the matter has been viewed with “utmost seriousness”, particularly in light of the Model Code of Conduct and service rules that restrict government employees from participating in political campaigns.

As noted in the official communication, failing to respond within the stipulated time may result in strict action under the prescribed service conduct rules. At the same time, an inquiry has been initiated to examine the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegations.

The show cause notice was issued by David Kumar Bora, ACS, Returning Officer for 119-Sonai LAC and Additional District Magistrate, Cachar.

Notably, the issue had earlier been formally raised with the Election Observer by the election agent of AGP candidate Karim Uddin Barbhuiya. In a written complaint, the agent alleged that Mazumder was “directly involved in election campaigning” of the Congress candidate, and urged authorities to take action as per law, citing supporting photographs.

The development comes a day after allegations surfaced that the teacher was seen at a political canvassing event in Silchar, where he was reportedly working closely as the political advisor of the Congress candidate from Sonai, Aminul Haque Laskar. Locals had earlier demanded action, claiming that complaints regarding his alleged political involvement had been raised multiple times in the past.

With the inquiry now underway, all eyes are on the administration’s next move, as the case brings renewed focus on the conduct of government employees during elections and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
