Tragedy in Sonai: 10-Year-Old Boy Drowns While Playing in Floodwater

In a heartbreaking incident from Sonai, a 10-year-old boy lost his life after drowning in stagnant floodwater while playing near his home on Monday (June 9). What began as a playful afternoon ended in grief, leaving the entire locality shaken.

Not long ago, Barak Valley experienced heavy rainfall that led to flood-like conditions in several parts. Although the rain has now stopped and water levels have started to recede, stagnant water remains in many low-lying areas. Sadly, one such spot in Bualjur, Sonai, became the site of this tragic incident.

The deceased, Tanij Ahmed Laskar, son of Haidar Ali Laskar, had gone out around 12 noon on Monday (June 9) to play with his friends near his house in Sonabari Ghat Part 2. While playing beside a waterlogged area, he suddenly slipped and fell into the stagnant water. Before anyone could realise the danger, he started drowning. His friends witnessed him struggling and shouted for help.

Local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing the cries and managed to pull Tanish out of the water. They tried to expel the water from his body by pressing on his chest and abdomen, but all efforts to revive him failed. The news of the accident brought his family members running, including his father. The entire area was soon enveloped in deep sorrow.

Rangirkhari Police Station was informed about the incident. After arriving at the scene, police conducted a preliminary investigation and then sent the boy’s body to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem. As per reports, the police have informed that the body will be handed over to the family after the examination on Tuesday morning.

It has also come to light that Tanij’s mother has been ill for quite some time, and his untimely death has left the family devastated. He is survived by a younger sister. The entire neighbourhood is in mourning, struggling to come to terms with the loss.
