Youth who Jumped Into Chiri River During Police Chase Found Dead, Four Constables Suspended

The body of a youth who went missing after jumping into the Chiri River during a police raid in Lakhipur on Sunday (June 14) was recovered on Monday (June 15), triggering fresh protests and tension in the area.

The deceased has been identified as Mahit Kanu, a resident of Lakhipur. His body was recovered from the river a short distance from the spot where he reportedly jumped into the water while trying to flee from a police operation against alleged gamblers on June 14.

The recovery of the body led to strong public anger. Local residents reportedly did not allow police personnel to recover the body and instead carried out the recovery themselves. Hundreds of people later gathered outside Lakhipur Police Station and staged a protest, demanding accountability over the incident.

According to police sources, Mahit was among a group of people who were allegedly gambling on the bank of the Chiri River when a police team conducted a raid on Sunday afternoon. As some individuals attempted to flee, Mahit allegedly jumped into the river to avoid being caught.

He was reported missing soon after entering the water. Police and rescue teams conducted a search operation in the river on Sunday night, but were unable to locate him.

The incident had already sparked tension in Lakhipur on Sunday evening, with residents questioning the circumstances that led to the youth entering the river.

Meanwhile, police have suspended four constables who were part of the operation. According to police sources, the personnel allegedly conducted the raid without informing their senior officers.

The recovery of Mahit’s body has further intensified public anger, and protests continued outside the police station on Monday. A large police presence remained in the area as authorities monitored the situation.
