Zero Out of 70: Assam University FYUG Results Spark Student Outrage

Assam University’s recently declared FYUG odd semester examination results have triggered widespread controversy, with students from several colleges across Assam alleging serious errors in the evaluation process.

Students from different districts, including Cachar have claimed that many candidates received unusually low marks, with some reportedly scoring zero, two, four, or fourteen marks across multiple theory papers. The similarity in marks across different subjects has raised concerns among students, who argue that such results are difficult to explain.

The issue has been widely discussed on social media over the past few days, with students from various colleges under Assam University sharing screenshots of their mark sheets and expressing dissatisfaction with the results.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Sahanaj Laskar, a student of Cachar College, claimed that he had collected more than 1000 mark sheets in which students had received good marks in their sessional assessments but failed in theory examinations. He further shared that students expected to score above 50 marks but instead received marks as low as zero, two, or four.

Questioning the results, Laskar said that while scores of zero may be understandable in examinations such as NEET or JEE, which have negative marking, it is difficult for students to accept receiving zero after attempting a 70-mark written examination.

He cited an example of a student who allegedly received exactly four marks in every subject and questioned how such a pattern could occur.

Calling the results “totally unacceptable”, Laskar said students were demanding clarification from the university. He warned that if the matter is not resolved by 12 June, students would organise a democratic protest at Assam University.

He also stated that the university would be responsible if any student took an extreme step such as suicide due to distress caused by the results.

Barak Bulletin attempted to contact Assam University Registrar Dr. Pradosh Kiran Nath for a response. However, despite repeated attempts, he could not be reached. Multiple attempts were also made to contact Controller of Examinations Dr. Suprabir Dutta Roy, but he was unreachable as well.

Meanwhile, Assam University on Monday issued a notification regarding re-checking and re-evaluation of answer scripts for the FYUGP Odd Semester Examination, November 2025.

According to the notice, the online application process for re-checking and re-evaluation will remain open from 5 June to 11 June 2026. Students can submit applications through the university examination portal and are required to provide printed copies of the application form, payment receipt, and grade card to their respective colleges.

The university stated that re-evaluation fees have been fixed at Rs. 200 per paper, while re-checking or scrutiny will cost Rs. 100 per paper. A grade card fee of Rs. 50 will also apply. The facility is available only for theory papers and not for practical examinations.

The notification further clarified that scrutiny will only involve checking the posting and totalling of marks. Students can apply for scrutiny in a maximum of three papers per semester. The university also stated that marks obtained after re-evaluation will be treated as final, even if the revised result changes a student’s pass or fail status.

However, the announcement has drawn criticism from students, many of whom have questioned why they should bear the financial burden of re-evaluation if the alleged errors originated from the university’s side. Several students who contacted Barak Bulletin described the fees as unfair and demanded that any correction process be carried out without additional charges if mistakes in evaluation are confirmed.
