10-ft-long snake recovered from Derby tea garden in Cachar
A 10-ft-long snake – Greater Black Krait was reportedly recovered from Derby tea garden, around 26km from Silchar, in Cachar district on Tuesday.
According to reports, local residents saw the snake stuck in the branch of a tree in the tea garden’s section-9 area around 9 am this morning. The reptile was struggling to get out following which some of the villagers tried shaking the tree to help the creature free itself.
Receiving the information, the Dholai forest ranger Mujibur Rahman Choudhury along with the tea garden manager Sukesh Singh reached the spot. Some of the branches of the tree, where the snake was stuck, were chopped off as per instructions from Choudhury and Singh and the snake was rescued.
The forest ranger identified it as the Greater Black Krait. Commonly known as black krait, it is a venomous snake belonging to the family Elapidae. It is mainly found in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Nocturnal and terrestrial by nature, it preys mostly on snakes and occasionally on lizards, fishes and frogs.
