“I Am Not the Spa Owner”: Dr Bhaskar Gupta Breaks Silence, Shares Tenancy Papers

Silchar Medical College and Hospital Principal Dr Bhaskar Gupta on Friday (July 3) denied allegations that he owned or operated the spa at the centre of the ongoing investigation into alleged immoral activities at Imperial Mall in Silchar. Addressing the media, he said misinformation was being spread on digital platforms and clarified that neither he nor his wife had any role in running the business. He also shared documents showing that the tenancy of the premises had been terminated after the police raid over an alleged violation of the rental agreement.

Dr Gupta said the commercial premises where the spa operated belongs to his wife, Smt Sharmistha Gupta, and not to him. According to the tenancy agreement, the shop space measuring 1,445 square feet on the third floor of Imperial Mall was rented to Rohit Debnath, also known as Hirak Debnath, from September 8, 2025, for running a business named “Free Mind Spa & Beauty Salon”.

He said the tenancy agreement clearly stated that the premises could only be used as a spa and beauty salon and prohibited any illegal, immoral or flesh trade-related activities. He added that the agreement also provided that any such violation would result in immediate termination of the tenancy.

Dr Gupta said neither he nor his wife had received any complaint, objection or report about any alleged illegal activities at the spa before the police conducted the raid. He claimed they came to know about the allegations only after the news of the operation was reported in the media.

Expressing disappointment over the coverage, Dr Gupta alleged that some sections of the media had portrayed him as the owner of the spa and the person behind the alleged activities. He rejected the allegations and said they were completely false. He added that his family was fully cooperating with the police investigation and did not support any illegal or immoral activities.

His wife, Smt Sharmistha Gupta, said the property had been purchased through a loan from LIC and was rented out in good faith. She said they had never knowingly allowed any illegal activity to take place on the premises and had no idea that such acts were allegedly being carried out under the guise of a spa.

The documents shared by the family include a termination notice dated June 27, 2026. The notice states that the tenancy was cancelled after electronic media reported on June 26 that the tenant had allegedly been caught red-handed carrying out illegal activities at the premises. Citing violations of the tenancy agreement, the notice declared that the tenant was no longer entitled to occupy the property.

The clarification comes days after Dr Bhaskar Gupta and his wife were questioned by Cachar Police for around four hours as part of the investigation into the alleged immoral activities at two spas operating from Imperial Mall. Police have not announced any fresh findings, and the investigation remains ongoing.
