The state police under the strict direction of the new chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led Assam Government has been actively involved in the anti-drug campaign to bust illicit drugs throughout the state. The Director General of Police, Assam, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta also made it clear that the Police will intensify its crackdown on illegal trade and smuggling of addictive substances.

In the Cachar district today, the police in collaboration with the Special Task Force (STF) has apprehended one person in possession of suspected heroin drugs along with a scooty.

The incident happened at the Hauki Punji PWD road in the Jirighat area today and the amount of seized drugs weighed around 78 grams, packed inside six shop cases. Currently, the arrested miscreant is kept under police custody and will be produced in court soon.

The name of the arrested smuggler is Lalping Iom Hmar, aged 25, and is a resident of Labankhal village under the Jirighat police station.

Manoj Rajbongshi, Sonai police OC, said, “Based on a tip-off, we got intel that the smuggler was bound for Lakhipur in possession of illicit drugs. The police intercepted and caught him, the miscreant tried to escape but the police were able to nab him successfully. From his scooty, six shop boxes full of heroin drugs were recovered. Each box weighed around 13 grams which would make the total weight of the seized heroin at 78 grams. Right now, he has been taken under the custody of Jirighat police station and questioning is still going on.”

According to police, the miscreant was on his way to transport the seized amount of heroin to Lakhipur, when the police in collaboration with the STF caught him in possession of the illicit drugs.
