Banskandi Police Station allegedly releases thief without trial or punishment; locals protest
A couple of men, accused of robbing Lakkhi Sweets, were caught and presented before the police by the local residents. The names of the accused are Noor Alam and Sabbir Ahmed.
However, the next morning brought with it a surprise for the residents of Banskandi, as one out of the two robbers, Sabbir Ahmed, was released without any trial or punishment. The in-charge of Banskandi Police Station, Moniruddin is allegedly involved in the suspicious release of the thief. Residents are also alleging that there is an illegal association between the police and the robber.
As a symbol of outrage, the group of the local residents who caught the robbers, gathered around the Banskandi Police Station, in demand of an answer.
“After handing them (the robbers) to the police, the medical tests were conducted and Sabbir Ahmed was eventually released around 8 pm”, a local resident said.
“After finding him (Sabbir Ahmed) roaming outside, we questioned him, to which he answered that the police left him. The police said that they can’t keep a suspect with them for 12 hours. Later that day, his father was brought in to the Police Station for interrogation and was sent back eventually,” the resident added.
The owner of the sweet shop said, “The shop was robbed during the night and after that, I lodged a complaint in the Police Station next morning. After a few hours, I got the news that the thieves have been caught and I was summoned to verify if the goods were stolen from my shop.”
On being asked how many robbers were caught and what happened next, the owner replied, “Two robbers were caught but one of them was released afterward.”
Why did the police release one of the two thieves, remains a mystery. The locals allege that the in-charge is a partner in the crime while a few others say the in-charge took a bribe to release the culprit. They are demanding an investigation.
