Breaking: Violence breaks during Students' union election in Silchar Polytechnic, Police brings situation under control

The student election at Silchar Polytechnic ended today evening and the results were also declared after counting. As the norm goes, one party won and the other lost the election, following which there were jubilant celebrations among the winners and the ones who lost, were sad and demotivated for obvious reasons. During this moment a scuffle broke out between the two parties and it became a heated fight in no time. The fight between the two parties started outside the main gate but the fighting spread inside the campus as well. When the police were informed about this, the Rangirkhari police team rushed to the spot and they had to resort to lathi charge to control the mob of students.

Even though the Cachar Superintendent of Police denies lathi charge, Barak Bulletin correspondent has video footage where uniformed Policemen are seen using lathi. On December 6, the Silchar Polytechnic had its Student Union election and the results were also declared on the same day. After the results, there was a violent fight between both parties. The extent of the fight went to an extent that many students were injured and one of them is in critical condition.

When the police rushed to the spot after receiving information about this incident, they couldn’t control the two parties meeting into a heated fight, they resorted to lathi charge. The visuals of lathi charge are caught on camera by Barak Bulletin correspondent. Cachar SP APS Numal Mahatta on this situation said, “There was a student union election and it’s usual to have such small fights as there is winning and losing. The situation is totally under control now and I have contacted the Principal of the college to know more about the situation”.

Silchar Polytechnic Principal in this matter said, “We had the election for the student union today and it happened peacefully. The counting started at 2 PM and at the end of the counting, there was a slight rise in temperature between the two groups. In the meantime, what I have been informed was that someone from the outside pelted a stone inside. Later the situation went out of hand, but probably there were people involved from the outside who did so. I can not say what happened as I was not the eyewitness. The stone pelting injured a student in the head and when police came to the campus he was sent to the SMCH for treatment”.
