Obscene video leak leads to young woman’s tragic suicide in Lakhipur
A 20-year-old woman from Cachar allegedly died by suicide after an obscene video of her went viral, reportedly shared by her boyfriend. The incident occurred on Wednesday (February 12) in Lalang Part III, Moragang village, under the Lakhipur police station.
According to sources, the video surfaced on Tuesday night, leaving the young woman overwhelmed with shame. On Wednesday morning, her family discovered her hanging body in the bathroom and immediately informed the police. Lakhipur police conducted a preliminary investigation and sent the body for post-mortem at Silchar Medical College Hospital. Her funeral was held the same night.
Following the incident, the deceased’s mother lodged a complaint against the accused, Shahid Afridi Mazumder, a youth from Singerband currently working in Saudi Arabia. The victim’s family claims he circulated the video from a Saudi phone number. Her father alleges that the viral video forced his daughter to take the extreme step.
“The girl has hanged herself to commit suicide. Her boyfriend Shahid Afridi Mazumder and she had a relationship and whatever private moments they shared while they were in a relationship were shared by the boy with multiple people in and around our village. Photos and videos of private moments shared between them have been circulated on Tuesday night by the boy and on Wednesday morning the hanging dead body of the girl has been found. Out of shame, she killed herself. People of our village also received her objectionable images. Her respect and dignity have been violated and that is why she killed herself”, said a neighbour demanding action.
Another cousin of the deceased said, “Shahid had reached out to me to say that your sister is going to kill herself. Go and see her. I tried reaching out to her and her friends, but everyone’s phone was silent. By the time, I could make it to her home, she was already gone”.
Family members and local residents have demanded that the district police take action to extradite and arrest the accused under Indian law.
