Peaceful strike in Silchar: No arrests and complete support of the general public
The new farmers’ bill has garnered a great deal of opposition across the length and breadth of the country. Demanding it’s repeal, a strike was called today all over the nation by a conglomerate of farmers’ organisations. In Cachar too, the strike called by the farmers’ organisations remained peaceful at large with no arrests or any mishap whatsoever. A scenario that is rarely observed during bandhs. But a few pro-government organisations had mentioned earlier that they wouldn’t accept the strike. So a few shops remained opened and some vehicles were plying on the road.
In resistance to the newly introduced farm bill, protests have been going on for the last two weeks in India by farmers. Even after a period of talks and dialogues with the government, no solution could be arrived at. Although the strike was decided to be from morning 11 am to 3 pm at the all India level, in Cachar district, it was observed for 12 hours making an exception. The agitators had discussed the strike at length with Police Superintendent B.L Meena and other officers who requested them to carry it out in a peaceful manner. The promise was kept.
Picketers requested the public to support the strike. They gathered in front of the gates of various government organisations and requested the officials to support their cause. Some did while others didn’t. No picketer was seen blocking the railway services.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, on the other hand, agreed to sit in a meeting with the farmers on Tuesday night. In a nutshell, it was a remarkable all India strike held across the country with international coverage.
