Rare species of Indian Ferret Badger rescued from Dholai

A rare wild animal of cat species was recovered from Lailapur Burman Basti under Hwaithang range of Forest Department. Range Officer Uttamananda Goswami identified the animal as Indian Ferret Badger. Around 8 am on Wednesday, the rare species was spotted by Badrul Haque at his house in Burman Basti under the Lailapur beat office of the Forest Department. Badrul informed the Lailapur beat office about the matter. Forest worker Matiur Rahman Laskar and Saddam Hussain arrived at the spot after hearing the news. When they tried to catch the animal, the animal bit forest worker Matiur’s hand.

Later, they managed to rescue the animal and brought it to the Hwaithang range office. Range Officer Uttamananda Goswami said the animal is a rare species. Such animals have never been seen in this region. The animal will be released in the Barail sanctuary, he said.

Recently, several lojjaboti monkeys have been rescued from different localities under the Hwaithang Range of the Forest Department. This time the Indian Ferret Badger was recovered. When asked why wildlife is moving into the area, the Range Officer blamed climate change due to deforestation.

Informing about the rescue, DFO Cachar shared in the official WhatsApp group, “Our Barak Our Wildlife” that the Ferret was rescued based on a call received from a local. It was inside the ceiling of the local’s house and was later rescued and released back into the wild.
