‘Worked for AGP’: Congress Workers Corner Minority Wing President During Silchar Meeting
Tension broke out at the District Congress office in Silchar on Tuesday during a post-election review meeting after supporters of Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar confronted District Minority Department President Ansar Hussain Barlaskar over allegations of anti-party activities during the recent assembly elections.
According to party workers present at the meeting, Ansar Hussain Barlaskar was accused of working against the Congress candidate in Sonai and supporting AGP candidate Karim Uddin Barbhuiya during the election. The allegations led to heated arguments inside the meeting hall as several grassroots Congress workers demanded that he be removed from the gathering.
Speaking to the media after the incident, a representative of the agitating workers claimed that Ansar had openly worked for the AGP during the election instead of supporting Congress candidate, Aminul Haque Laskar. The representative said the workers were angered by the presence of a person they considered to have acted against the party’s interests.
The representative, however, denied reports of any physical assault. He stated that there was verbal outrage and strong demands from workers to remove “anti-Congress elements” from the party office, but no attack took place. He further said that grassroots workers wanted such individuals removed from the Congress and suggested that those unwilling to support the party could join the BJP instead.
The incident occurred during a constituency-wise review meeting organised by the District Congress Committee. The meeting was attended by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee leaders, including Pradesh Congress Secretary Pranjal Ghatowar, Swapan Kar and MLA Aminur Rashid Choudhury. Discussions relating to other constituencies reportedly proceeded peacefully before tensions emerged during the review of the Sonai constituency.
As the situation became heated, MLA Aminul Haque Laskar intervened and spoke to the agitating workers. According to party members, he appealed for calm and assured them that their concerns would be addressed, following which the situation returned to normal.
The development comes just days after Aminul Haque Laskar himself faced opposition from Congress workers in Hailakandi during a meeting at the Hailakandi Congress Bhawan. During that incident, some workers allegedly raised slogans against him and labelled him a “BJP dalal”, demanding that he leave the venue.
On June 2, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee suspended the members involved in the Hailakandi protest. The suspension order was signed by APCC General Secretary, Ramanna Baruah and stated that the action was taken under the direction of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi.
