Sribhumi: Elderly Farmer Assaulted, Two Buffaloes Allegedly Taken Across Border

An elderly farmer was allegedly assaulted and tied up by unidentified miscreants who later fled with two buffaloes from a border area in Assam’s Sribhumi district, according to a complaint lodged with authorities.

The incident reportedly took place on Saturday afternoon near Bilbari along the India-Bangladesh border under Patharkandi Police Station. The victim, identified as Alauddin, a resident of Durganagar Angura GP under Nilambazar Police Station, was grazing his buffaloes in agricultural land near the Bilbari BSF camp when the alleged attack occurred.

According to family members and Alauddin himself, a group of unidentified men allegedly attacked the farmer at around 4 pm, tied his hands and legs with gamchas and assaulted him before taking away two buffaloes.

Alauddin was later rescued after his grandson reportedly heard his cries for help and reached the spot. Family members subsequently visited the border area and claimed that fencing wires had been cut and that the buffaloes had been taken across the border.

The injured farmer was first provided primary medical treatment and was later referred to Karimganj Civil Hospital for further care.

Speaking to media, Alauddin recounted the incident and alleged that he was returning home when several unknown men attacked him with a “dao” and beat him severely. He claimed that his hands and legs were tied with gamchas and that he was dragged over a considerable distance. Questioning how the attackers managed to enter the area, he expressed concern over security along the border.

The victim has alleged that the attackers were Bangladeshi nationals. Family members have submitted a written complaint at the Baraigram Watch Post and are seeking legal action against those responsible. Police have visited the location and an investigation is underway.
